Kitchen Hack, Volume XIII: Snack Hack

Let's say you're reading the latest Bon Appetit magazine, blissfully free of Gwyneth Paltrow. And let's say between groaning about how realistic serving on $1,200 plates really is and wishing you had a hip house with hip friends who would come and make pickles and drink cocktails, you realize you're starving. And ornery. Enter the Boiled Egg and Toast. Stick with me on this.
Dig out one boiled egg from the fridge, peel, slice, mix in a microwave-safe bowl with a teaspoon (or tablespoon, whatever makes you happy) of butter, salt and pepper. Cover, and microwave for 15 seconds, then 15 seconds more, then another 15 seconds if needed. You want the butter melted and the egg warm but please stop short of having an exploded egg all over the interior of your microwave. You'll know when you've gone too far. (And then you will be even crankier!)

Meanwhile, slice a thin piece of bread and toast it. When it is toasty, use a knife and spread your buttery egg mixture over the bread. No need to butter the bread if you put enough in the egg. Enjoy! This will be warm and satisfying and interesting and less work than frying an egg. Plus, it'll set you back about $.27, so it's great for those poor days.

So pretty much every day, really.

Happy Monday.
